Anna Hyatt Huntington was commissioned by a group of patrons to create a monument to the French saint Joan of Arc. The heroic monument was conceived as a good will gesture to France. The original statue, which is on Riverside Drive in New York City, was unveiled in December 1915 and several smaller replicas were produced.

Huntington, who established her reputation as a sculptor of animal subjects, carefully renders the saint's war horse. She captures equally well the spirit of divine inspiration and righteousness in the young "Maid of Orléans."
