The twenty-two engravings Blake made to illustrate the Hebrew bible's Book of Job are considered his greatest graphic achievement. This book narrates the trials of Job whose faith God challenged in countless ways. The book's attempt to answer the question "Why do the righteous suffer?" resonated with Blake personally. This particular image was inspired by a passage in Job 38 when God describes a heavenly apparition that Job, as a mere mortal, could not have witnessed at the time of creation.
