What! –doubt me!- what a pang thou sent
Thro’ my devoted heart,
A doubt!- how oft a doubt has rent
The fondest hearts apart!
And could’st thou doubt, when I have vow’d
My heart, and soul were thine?
Thou little know’st the feelings pour’d
That fill this breast of mine.
‘Tis true, mine is a rug[g]ed heart,
Perhaps a selfish one-
But ‘tis its motto- “Have no part”-
Have all, or else, have none!
Now then, if Susan, thou can’t give
Thy soul, thy thoughts to me,
I mean, by Heaven, while I live,
To live alone for thee.

Emily H. Stafford
