After 1800, refinements in champlevé enameling techniques permitted artisans to realize quite complex designs, outlined by the metal divisions between the enameled cells. On this watchcase, flowers and leaves are champlevé enameled in translucent red, white, blue, and green and are highlighted by black against a mustard-colored background. On the silver dial, Roman chapters are set into beveled areas that provide alternating lighter and darker shades when viewed.
