This was one of fifteen woodcuts, inspired by passages in the Book of Revelation that earned Dürer wealth and fame when they were published in Europe at the end of the 15th century. This print depicts the epic battle prophesied to take place at the end of time when the Archangel Michael battles the forces of evil, which Dürer envisioned as a five-headed beast with winged, reptilian bodies with goat-like horns.
