Turnvereins were societies of German immigrants dedicated to the promotion of strong bodies and minds through gymnasiums and social events. Utica’s Turnverein was founded in 1854 and Dolgeville’s in 1882. Alfred Dolge, the German-born industrialist who developed Dolgeville, felt that there was a particular need for such a group in an isolated town with long winters.
