Quarter-repeating Watch
Artist: Maker unknown (probably United States)
Artist: Breguet et Fils (Paris, France; active 1820 - 1833)
Breguet’s refinement of the caliber resulted in a thinner, flatter watchcase that permitted decorative effects not previously possible. The guilloche on this watch has been worked around the perimeter to give the illusion of rippling fabric. It is enameled with blue and green translucent enamel with gold rosettes and gold paillons, shaped gold or silver foil decorations fused to the enameled ground prior to applying the finishing layer of clear or translucent enamel. The center of the dial is artfully designed with an engraved rosette and a petaled border. The black enamel surrounding the petals is framed by a white enameled scalloped border, guilloche with green translucent enamel, and a black enamel band.
Because the movement is not signed while the case and dial are, Breguet and fils, which retailed watches made by other firms, probably retailed this watch but did not make it.
