This watch is a faithful copy of a viola da gamba (the precursor of the modern cello) with two cut-out sound holes, gold strings between the tailing and the scroll, and the scroll in the shape of an animal’s head. A small ring is fastened on the end of the scroll so that the watch could be worn on a chain. The fingerboard is enameled black. The engine-turned grooves in the gold case suggest the natural wood grain of the instrument. The reverse depicts a scene with three classical muses, executed in painted red and white enamels. The back of the instrument opens to reveal the watch.
