Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) was one of the most important photographers of the 20th-century. He was instrumental in establishing the legitimacy of photography as an art form. One of his contributions to the field was the development of an abstract style, similar to the avant-garde style in Europe. He was also a prominent gallery director in New York City and married to the artist Georgia O'Keefe.

Cunningham had several interactions with Stieglitz. During one of her first meetings with him, she was intimidated. Twenty-four years later, however, after her reputation as a photographer had grown, she photographed him at his gallery.
