This etching is part of a suite of images that was inspired by French Cardinal Richelieu's invasion of the territory of Lorraine; one of a series of conflicts between Catholics and Protestants in central Europe during the first half of the 17th century known as the Thirty Years War. Callot's mordant commentary on human cruelty and folly was an important inspiration nearly two hundred years later for Francisco de Goya y Lucientes's Disasters of War prints.
