In the fourteenth century, clocks incorporated into church towers and other public spaces became symbols of civic pride and overall welfare. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when clock technology had developed and table clocks became available to the wealthy, elaborate brass cases in imitation of these architecturally significant structures became popular. This case, with detailed engraved ornamentation, is a nineteenth-century revival of the form.
