Documents in the Museum's archives indicate that Mrs. Jame Watson Williams (Helen Munson Williams) purchased this painting in 1882 from the American Art Gallery in New York for $750.00. A larger version of this composition was exhibited by this artist at Philadelphia's Centennial Exposition in 1876. Gifford traveled to Constantinople in 1869. He exclaimed in his journal at that time that the "boats and costumes on the water on either side were all aglow with color, while through the purple haze of the distance flashed a thousand little golden lights from the windows of the Seraglio and the mosque of St. Sophia."
