The year Dalí had his first show in the United States he made a series of illustrations for The Songs of Maldoror (1868-69), a poetic novel by Comte de Lautréamont (Isidore Lucien Ducasse) about Maldoror, an unrepentant misanthrope. Dalí's illustrations are not based on specific scenes described in the novel but, instead, present hallucinogenic visions; in this case a partially dismembered human figure whose limbs are supported by crutches in a landscape of infinite distance.
