These are some of the prints Chagall made to illustrate the famous collection of Middle Eastern folk tales know as A Thousand and One Nights. The text, with its exotic stories of love, fate, destiny, and death, stirred Chagall's romantic imagination and provided a fertile outlet for his formidable skills as a colorist. Each print is based on a particular passage of the narrative, but all the images embody Chagall's highly personalized visionary response to the narrative.
