Ida Applebroog constructs paintings with pictures she has reconfigured from media or her memory. In these multi-paneled works, the images don't seem to relate to each other, but they simulate the barrage of visual information we receive every day.
Applebroog presents us with many open-ended questions - who is Mr. Henry? Why does that girl have a bucket on her head? - but does not provide easy answers. She believes that each viewer brings to her paintings deeply buried histories that might get jarred by this unlikely juxtaposition of images. That is, we will each interpret the painting a different way, depending on our personal experiences.
